CHANDIGARH: With the aim of making the learning process more effective, the UT department of education has begun running smart classrooms in 18 government schools of the city. This is part of an initiative under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
Following the audio-video approach to imparting education, students are being taught with the help of CDs on different subjects, especially Science, English and Hindi.

Though the project is limited to till Class 8, schools have been allowed to facilitate students up to class 12.
A multimedia room linked with the computer network and internet, and installed with a LCD, is used for showing videos. Teachers say this method is more beneficial for teaching theoretical rather than practical subjects like mathematics.
''If I am teaching science, we can use visuals to enable the students to grasp things more easily. But this is not effective in teaching mathematics, as the students won't really understand unless they try it out on their own,'' said Jyotsana, a teacher of GMSSS, Sector 10. The objective of this initiative is to make the teaching process more interesting.
